· Making a CNC Milling machine requires a lot of metal working. Most people will use a manual milling machine to do the metal work. I was lucky to have access to a CNC machining center so that is how I made my ballscrew mounts. Using the machining center was faster and I believe gave me better parts. The milling required accurate indexing for drilling holes for the balls, this could have been done by writing some simple G code to use CNC features but I thought it both quicker and better for the purposes of demonstration to use a rotary table with chuck. The lathe work could also be done on the mill with the rotary table if a lathe is not available.
It is possible to install systems for a lower cost, particularly if the existing infrastructure at the site lends itself to easy adaption for a modern hydropower system so only modest or no civil engineering works would be needed. However even in the most favourable circumstances it is unlikely that the cost would reduce by more than 50% from that shown in the table.
